Ligaments

Ligaments perform the important function of holding bones together. They maintain the strength and integrity of all the body's joints. Without them your body would collapse; it would have no structure. Ligaments are made of a very tough, fibrous material similar to tendons. They are strong and look like flattened nylon ropes. Ligaments sprains or strains are the cause of pain more often than people realize. Pain, for instance in the upper back and shoulder area is often attributed to muscle tension or injury, when in fact it is usually caused by strained ligaments. Ligaments are most commonly injured in the neck, back, knees, ankles, and wrists. Because there are a half dozen different types of ligaments that help hold the spinal vertebrae together, neck and back injuries often involve strained ligaments.
